| A note from Darren:
My older brother, Steven,
spent over 11 years locked up in some of the nation's toughest
prisons and now works with prison officials and community agencies
on re-entry and addiction recovery programs. He became a
Christian during his stay in a Nebraska prison, and went on to lead
worship in penitentiary church services.
He is a gifted singer, who leads a
rather unique style of worship in contrast to today's popular style.
He rarely uses his guitar, often using a soundtrack or no back-up at
all to lead worship in a style that mirrors the Jesus movement style
sing-a-longs of the 70's and old time spirituals. (He does, however,
borrow from contemporary worship groups as well.) He picked up
this style in prison, and it is a remarkably warm method that
encourages participation and audience inclusion. I work with a
lot of worship bands, and I can honestly say that Steve's voice and
energy is top level. Its worth noting that in our experience,
teens and pre-teens alike are extremely responsive to Steven's
style.
Steven has an amazing testimony
that is in stark contrast to my own, even though we grew up in the
same household. Whenever we work together, Steven will also
share his story. Together, I think we have a very interesting
dynamic that isn't seen anywhere else out there.
